What

A tradition in the Tiki community, a TikiFest is when there is a meeting between at least two Tiki contributors that don't usually meet. This is an opportunity, usually, to drink adult beverages, get some laptops out and code wildly in group sessions and/or discuss about wiki technology and culture, etc. depending the mood and context. It is a great opportunity for Tiki users and Tiki power users to meet some of the developers and learn more stuff 😊

The majority of the most active contributors to Tiki will be present, with devs from 9 countries: Japan, Czech Republic, United Kingdom, France, Austria, Germany, Israel, USA and of course, many from Canada.

These 2 cities are a 2-hour train ride from each other

If you come for a shorter period (ex.: driving from the US), come towards the end, which will be the peak of everyone there. If you are travelling from far (ex.: Israel, Germany or Japan), you should come for two weeks and make that long flight worth it!

If you are flying, you'll likely find that flights to Ottawa are more expensive, so just fly to Montréal and it's an inexpensive bus or train ride from Montréal to Ottawa.

What to do for fun in Montreal and Ottawa/Gatineau

If you are from out of town and are planning to do some touristy things in Montreal or Ottawa, here is some info.

Montreal is a very fun and safe city with a vibrant nightlife and an excellent cultural scene. There will be plenty of folks there to help you find something fun to do.

Ottawa is a much more "sleepy" little town, but the planned site for TikiFest Ottawa is right at the edge of Gatineau Park, a great natural place. If you are into hiking, Alain will be happy to take you into its rolling hills for a nice walk (http://tinyurl.com/cdge6nj... bring good boots as it will likely be muddy). We might also have dinner one night at Château Montebello (http://tinyurl.com/d7td7s6). Bring a bathing suit if you want to use their really nice pool (http://tinyurl.com/ctm8hb4)

Venues

Ottawa

• Most of the event will happen at Alain Désilets's house in Gatineau (just next to Ottawa) like the original TikiFestOttawa in 2008.

• The TikiFest will mainly be at the AvanTech.net offices and people will have places to stay within a short walking distance
• The Internet connection is really good: Up to 25 Mbps Down / 8 Mbps Up, and there is a backup regular DSL.

• We have free places to sleep for everyone both in Montréal and Ottawa at their community member's houses

There goes STM shuttle bus 747 from the Trudeau Airport to City Center and back. It has Wi-Fi onboard! 😯 Ticket is $9 CAD, valid for 24hrs. You can use it for Metro too.

Train Montreal-Ottawa & back (http://www.viarail.ca/)

Having checked possibilities of attending both the Montreal and Ottawa portions of the meeting, and using the train to travel one or both ways between these cities, there's a rather serious problem for anyone flying in to Canada from greater distances: Canadian baggage restrictions.

Most airlines allow passengers to check in one (1) bag weighing 23 Kg. Canadian passenger trains allow only one (1) bag weighing 18 Kg. For bags weighing above that, but under 22.67 Kg there is a Can$20 one-way surcharge. And bags over 22.67 Kg cannot be taken along at all!

Given costs of e.g. Can$37 Montreal-Ottawa Monday, 15 April, and Can$33 Ottawa-Montreal Wednesday, 23 April, (as of 4 March 2013; nonrefundable online booking rate), the baggage surcharge practically doubles the cost of these train rides.

For anyone deciding to fly in and out of Toronto, the rates are Can$83 Toronto to Ottawa (15 April) and Can$45 back to Toronto (23 April), again as of 4 March; same rate.

Bus

What about bus ? Is it anything better ?
Prices one way ride Montreal (e) to Ottawa range from $19 CAD to $34. For passengers travelling on Greyhound schedules, one (1) piece of baggage will be free for each adult and child. One (1) additional piece of baggage can be accepted for a charge of $15.00 for adults only. One (1) small bag, up to 25 pounds, plus one personal item (purse, handbag, etc) can be taken aboard for each adult or child. Carry one bags must fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat. The "no charge" allowance for baggage is restricted to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) per bag. Baggage exceeding fifty (50) pounds per bag will be subject to overweight baggage charges. Baggage over 32 kilograms (70 pounds) per bag will not be accepted.

Car

Montreal to Ottawa with Alain

I (Alain) will drive from Montreal to Ottawa on Sunday PM or Monday AM. I will take amette, luci and olaf, each with either 2 carryons, or one large suitcase each (Earlier I had said that I could only accomodate one carryon each, but then I remembered I have a roof rack and I will put it on the car for the trip).

Note that I will not be driving back to Montreal though, so you would have to arrange for the return trip.

• amette : I'm very much interested and it fits me perfectly that you only drive one direction. This way I can see one direction by car and the other by train - maximizing the potential experience input of my travel. I was just going to defer to people with heavier luggage, but as those don't seem to turn up - I'm raising my hand and am "first come" now! 😊
